OROVILLE, CA (AP) -- A gunman was in custody after firing shots inside a northern California high school Friday morning, authorities said. No one was injured.

There were no injuries resulting from the incident at Las Plumas High School, said Sang Kim, a spokesman for Butte County.

Kim said the student had taken hostages around 9 a.m., but "as of 10:40 a.m., all hostages have been released." He did not say how many students had been taken hostage.

A message posted on the Oroville Union High School District Web site said all six schools were locked down until the standoff ended.

Oroville is 65 miles north of Sacramento.

Butte County residents are facing the biggest challenge they have faced in the last 25 years. Decisions are being made that will affect each of us and our children for the next 25 years.
Do you want Butte County to stay rural agricultural as it has in the past? Do you want 2 percent growth yearly, 5 percent yearly, 100,000 new homes? Do you want development? How much? Are you involved with agriculture? Are you a small contractor? Are you a subcontractor? Do you want your space? Do you like living closer together? Do you ride a bike? Do you drive a car? Are you willing to pay for new roads, bike trails, increased water costs, new schools and parks?

The General Plan update is making these decisions from now until January. If you have an opinion, this is the time to speak up. Please contacor write to your supervisor at 7 County Center Drive, Oroville, CA 95965. Better yet, go to the meetings that are being published on the Butte County Web site.

These decisions can be influenced. It is up to us to do so because we are going to have to live with them forever.

― Jan Sneed, Chico
